Bohemian label House of Skye encapsulates the chilled vibes of Perth and our beach culture. Available all across Perth at stores such as Varga Girl, Eros and Scarlet Fashion. We chatted to founder and designer, Tash.
What was it that first drew you to fashion?
As a teenager I was always really interested in art, and always enjoyed my high school art classes – they allowed me to experience an aspect of life that wasn’t all about University and in a sense, growing up. From there I guess my love of fashion evolved from art and I was fortunate enough to be able to study fashion and make a career out of it.
Is there a truly memorable moment in regards to your work?
I have been very fortunate to have had so many memorable moments, but I think the one that stands out the most is when the label was picked up nationally. I now have 10 new stockists in South Australia and am currently expanding into the eastern states.
Spill the beans, what big plans have you got lined up?
I’m really excited to be attending Hong Kong Fashion Week this July. It’s a great opportunity to see what the rest of the world is doing in terms of new design techniques and fabrication. Whilst it will be great fun I actually look forward to being able to source some amazing new fabrics and finishings – especially with my upcoming Spring/Summer collections. This trip is really exciting because I’m hoping to play around with some new bohemian prints and even introduce some footwear into the label.
What are your biggest influences in your designs?
I’m always finding myself drawn to images of Brigitte Bardot, Nicole Richie and Rachel Zoe. They emulate the perfect bohemian woman in my eyes and they always dress so effortless. Something that’s really nice is that they pick pieces that are quite classic and transitional and I think that’s important in a day and age where more often than not I’m asking myself ‘where did all that time and money go?!’. By wearing pieces that can be repeated, and paired with new pieces, you can create a completely new outfit and look. It just goes to show that you don’t have to buy a new outfit for every occasion.
Where can we find House of Skye in Perth?
You can find House of SKYE in a variety of boutiques across Perth and WA. To name a few, Method Clothing, Milk Boutique, Eros, Varga Girl, Scarlet Fashion, Salt Boutique, This Fine Day, Ms Demeanour Boutique and Butterscotch Boutique.
Tell us about the inspiration behind your latest collection?
Fringe Affair is my latest collection, focusing on fringe detail, and draws a lot of its inspiration from old Western movies and literature. When I was first coming up with ideas for the new collection I always envisioned this bohemian girl strolling through a grassy field and just thought ‘here it is, here’s the idea!’ From there I just did my research and I found this really cool Indian headpiece that I absolutely loved –which we used in our latest photo-shoot. I wanted to keep the collection quite simple in terms of silhouettes and just really focus on texture and techniques, and play with some new colours. It’s always really exciting starting a new collection – you’re encouraged to think outside the box and play with new ideas whilst keeping with the philosophy of the label. Stay tuned for the launch of this collection in the coming months.

What is your favourite or most prized piece in your wardrobe?
Currently I am living in the Vanika Split Dress worn back with the Zoe Wooly Jacket. Both are from my new collection Monochromux, hitting stores soon. The dress is so flattering and stylish with the tie-died print. I can wear it with flats or boots during the day or dress it up with heels for night. The Zoe Wooly Jacket goes with absolutely everything in my wardrobe so is a great wardrobe staple for winter
Is there an event or exhibition you are most excited about that is coming to Perth?
In November the Margaret River Gourmet Escape is on again. I love getting down to Margaret River whenever I can, and the Gourmet Escape is a great reason to visit the beautiful town. I love to try all the delicious food and wine and meet some great people.
Where is your favourite hangout or secret spot in Perth?
We’re really lucky in Perth that we have so many great hangout places – old and new. For me though I love the strip along the coast. There’s nothing like having a dip in the ocean and then popping into Yelo, Voyage Kitchen or Soda Sun Lounge for a juice or yummy coffee. In terms of secret spots, although definitely becoming more well known, I love the Raw Kitchen in Freo. It has a really cool vibe and a delicious raw menu for the healthy girl of today. Try the raw club sandwich!
