Morrison is a brand that instantly evokes a feeling in people. An effortless elegance born in Fremantle; Morrison is the equivalent of your chic Parisian neighbour. Always put together beautifully but with minimal fuss. Focusing on fabrics and drapery; husband and wife duo Kylie and Richard have created a label that makes you FEEL more refined while remaining classically understated. We were lucky enough to interview Kylie Radford and get a sneak peek behind the scenes of one of Australia's most iconic labels.
Who is the Morrison woman?
The Morrison women is looking for quality and timeless designs. Morrison’s philosophy is all about relaxed silhouettes with a focus on beautiful detailing and luxurious natural fabrics.
Your range is very sophisticated yet simple, where do you pull inspiration from in designing a collection?
Inspiration usually starts with the sourcing of fabrics. We travel internationally once or twice a year and are influenced by fashion on the street, art and architecture. Our current collection is called Surface and is inspired by modern architecture, clean lines and subtle colours.
What are the positives of having a Perth born and based label?
We love living in Perth so that is the biggest positive! In terms of our brand and our growth, we’re lucky to have the creative space to develop a unique brand identity and aesthetic.
Proudest moment for the label?
I don’t think there is one, as we've had so many proud moments over the last 13 years. Some highlights would be opening our first store in Fremantle and being listed as BRW’s Fastest Growing Start Up in our early years. Those achievements were pretty encouraging, as was moving to our new offices in South Fremantle with the beach across the road.
Best way to fight through a creative block?
Taking a break or working on something else usually works for me. I also have a great design team, so we often getting together to brainstorm is a great motivator.
Favourite place to eat or drink in Perth?
My backyard…. We just built an outdoor pizza oven and open fire - so it's perfect for entertaining, especially now the weather is cooling down. If we go out, I love Bread in Common or Habitue in Fremantle.
How do you keep your work and home life balanced, being a husband and wife team?
It's always challenging. We have a rule not to talk about work at home. Also, our two boys Baxter and Louis are great levellers and help us switch off.
Our focus is on retail expansion within Australia. We have recently opened two stores in Melbourne and one in Brisbane and we're planning to open another two in the next 6-12 months.
