Growing up, the magic and wonder of Disney was an important part of our childhood. Aladdin was always a firm favourite so when we were invited to see it on stage at Crown Perth it took us back to being kids all over again and we couldn’t contain our excitement!
The anticipation was palpable as we waited for the curtains to draw on Agrabah and when they did we were not disappointed.
The set is breathtakingly good. Like. OMG good. Somehow in the blink of an eye you are transported to different places in mere seconds and (not so) spoiler alert – the cave scenes are mind blowing.
Another deserving mention – the cast and their crazy quick costume changes. The timing of it all was so impeccable and speaks to this performance being a perfectly oiled machine.
But lastly, and most importantly, the cast themselves. Having been fortunate enough to be teased with some taster performances earlier in the year we knew the vocals would be phenomenal but to see it all come together with the amazing costumes and ornate set design really took us back to the wonder of Disney all over again (and may have had us embarrassingly dancing in our seats.)
Shubshri Kandiah as Jasmine and Graeme Isaako as Aladdin were perfect together and the flying carpet scene will fill you with wonder and confusion as to just HOW they managed to do that all at the once. However, it really is Gareth Jacobs as Genie who steals the show. ‘Friend Like Me’ will blow any musical or Disney cynics out of the water and have you smiling stupidly to yourself as you remember it even days later.
This is a show to take you back to that simple childhood wonder and excitement that Disney is so known for. Definitely one not to be missed, the show is only running until the 28th of October so book your ticket now!
