Netflix has rebooted the 2003 makeover show Queer Eye and we are seriously not worthy.
For those of you who have been living under a cultural rock, Queer Eye is at it’s core a makeover show – like those we have watched for years where after a few figurative and sometimes literal nips and tucks the subject emerges butterfly like and looking a million dollars. We have always loved those shows for vapid entertainment value however the core message always seemed to say that if you look better you will be better – which in a world of rampant body dysmorphia can sometimes be dangerous.
Queer Eye though is cut from a different cloth. As the opening trailer states – the new Fab 5 are here to find out how we are similar rather than different and their goal is to come together to a point where we can understand each other.
While each episode contains a physical overhaul and some serious drool worthy interiors (Hola Bobby please come and make over our lives) it also addresses some pretty heavy issues, from religious institution’s treatment of gay people to the volatile dynamic of the police and Black community in America at the moment.
The heart warming (and be warned- tear inducing) moments aren’t when Jonathon gets rid of the hapless subject’s unkempt beard or Antoni is legit coaching a grown man on how to make guacamole like google aint a thing. Instead the show shines when despite perceived differences the Fab 5 and their subjects connect over topics which are at times frankly confronting and yet find a comfortable and not at all trite middle ground.
The true magic of this series is that in a world of drama and negative reality TV this show shines a light on how everyone is dealing with issues and how coming together without an agenda and showing people basic kindness can deescalate and resolve perceived tensions. It’s a timely reminder that life is better when you are kind and open to new experiences and also that maybe we are due for a spring clean so our interiors can look as on point as the ones Bobby pulls together like a G D magician.
So if you need a mindset makeover and also some inspo to live your best life binge watch Queer Eye immediately and for added good feels follow the boys on insta to watch them go nuts over each other’s selfies and food snaps like the actual positive vibes angels they are and that we are not worthy of.
You Are Welcome.
